Knock at the Cabin is a mystery horror movie that was just recently released this past February. It follows a young girl and her parents while vacationing at a remote cabin when they are taken hostage by 4 armed strangers and asked to kill one person from their family to avert the apocalypse. Plus, it is directed by none other than M. Night Shyamalan.

The concept of this movie is one that definitely caught me off guard, but with M. Night Shyamalan as the director I was not surprised that it was a very suspenseful movie and psychologically captivating. He has made his name in thriller movies such as directing: Split (2016), Old (2021), Glass (2019), and The Happening (2008). With Dave Bautista (star of My Spy) as apart of the cast, I was immediately intrigued because I love his work. Now, when I saw Jonathan Groff, I was a bit hesitant.

Seeing Groff mainly in Glee and Broadway, I was a bit concerned about his part in this movie and being able to portray the natural fear in a movie like this, but boy I was completely wrong. Groff did his part AND then some, the pure confusion and panic that he conveyed throughout the movie really brought it all together. I think what I love most about all of Shyamalan’s movies is that he displays this original and creepy concept, but it does not stop there. He makes these complex and intricate storylines which are able to illustrate his brillance and imagination. The movie keeps you engaged the entire time; it is bizarre in the best way possible. It is very fast-paced, which I appreciate. Instead of having a 30 minute backstory at the beginning and then getting to the real meat of the story, it starts of running at the very beginning and provides flashbacks throughout the movie which allows us a sense of unpredictability and excitement from the start. With M. Night as the director, prepare to probably never want to go to a secluded cabin again. It also stars Rupert Grint (star of Harry Potter), Ben Aldridge (star of Spoiler Alert), Abby Quin, Kristen Cui, and Nikki Amuka-Bird (star of Old). Available to watch on Peacock!

We just watched this today. My husband didn’t like it, but I liked the way the characters interacted with each other and kept the tension going.

I was going to watch this but then I found out it’s based on “The Cabin at the End of the World” which I’m planning to read, so now I have to wait until I read the book before I can watch the movie. Because rules! 😬

That sounds like a good and scary thriller. Sometimes Shyamalan make good movies. I had never heard of this one. I will get it.

I think this is one of M. Night’s better films. While the ending was a little too predictable for my tastes, I liked the execution and the acting was excellent, particularly Bautista. M. Night gets bonus points from me for casting him in a leading role here.

Hi Bruce! I feel that you are on point regarding it being one of his better films. I completely agree, the acting did not disappoint. The initial attention grabber that brought me to watch it was because Dave Bautista was in the movie, and he absolutely did the part justice! 🙂
