“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (2023) follows our renowned Mario and Princess Peach along with other Mario Bros friends to square off against the all-powerful Bowser to stop his plans from conquering the world.
When I saw the score on Rotten Tomatoes, I was a bit worried about the movie, but because it was such a big part of my childhood I decided to form my own opinion. And I am so glad I did, because I actually really enjoyed the movie.
The first thing that caught my attention was all the vivid colors and the animations of the famous settings like The Mushroom Kingdom. I love how they incorporated so many smaller characters from the Super Mario world like King Boo, Kamek, Shy Guys, Goombas, Dry Bones, Bullet Bill, and Cheep Cheep. I think this is a movie that resonated with me a lot given it reminded me of all of my nostalgic childhood games. I really enjoyed how there was this contrast of two worlds, the real world and the Super Mario world. One thing in particular that I loved was Jack Black (star of Kung Fu Panda) as Bowser, he made this seemingly very intense character in the game into this mischievous and comical person which made the movie that much more enjoyable. I was worried about Chris Pratt’s (star of Guardian’s of the Galaxy) voice for Mario, but I think because of the backstory they provided with him being from Brooklyn, the voice fit a lot better than I originally thought. There were so many keen references to the different Super Mario games such as Luigi’s Mansion and Mario Kart. From the animation, to the gaming sounds, to the soundtrack, to the star studded cast, I think it is a really great watch especially if you played Super Mario Bros growing up! It also stars Anya Taylor-Joy (star of The Queen’s Gambit), Charlie Day (star of Fist Fight), Keegan-Michael Key (star of Key and Peele), Seth Rogan (star of Pineapple Express), and Fred Armisen (star of Big Mouth).
