Dumb Money (2023) is based on the true story where the everyday individuals flipped the script on Wall Street and got rich by turning GameStop into one of the world’s hottest companies. As a stock tip becomes a movement, everyone gets wealthy–until the billionaires fight back and both sides find their worlds turned upside down.

Dumb Money was a movie that truly surprised me. I really enjoyed the movie from the actors to the soundtrack to the accuracy on the original story. It was a truly captivating story whether you were aware of the crisis or not, it keeps the momentum and interest all the way through.

The cast was definitely star packed with Paul Dano, Shailene Woodley (star of Divergent), Seth Rogen (star of Pineapple Express), Pete Davidson (comedian and star of What Men Want), Sebastian Stan (star of Captain America: The First Avenger), America Ferrera (star of Ugly Betty). Dane DeHaan (star of The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Talia Ryder (star of Do Revenge), Anthony Ramos, Rushi Kota, Myha’la Herrold (star of Bodies Bodies Bodies), Olivia Thirlby (star of The Wedding Ringer), Vincent D’Onofrio (star of Men in Black), and Nick Offerman (comedian and star of We’re The Millers).

But they were all effectively used not just put in as placeholders for publicity, which made the movie that much more intriguing. The soundtrack perfectly paired with each scene, further supporting the vibe of the movie in its entirety. I was not aware of the story of GameStop so I went into the movie basically blind on the impact and intensity of the war between the Wall Street CEOs and the everyday people in regards to a stock. I wouldn’t have thought that a movie about a stock crisis would have me on the edge of my seat, but from start to finish it was compelling as it was entertaining. It was also refreshing to see a different sort of film that is funny and dramatic, but also real and grounded. I think it was a great watch compacted with humor, information regarding stocks and how CEOs move behind the scenes, and also a bit of nostalgia about the first wave of COVID in 2020.
