Today we will be interviewing Professor Kristyn Cathey! She teaches at Lamar University and Lamar Institute of Technology as an adjunct professor in the communications department. In addition she is a NSPRA 35 under 35, HASPRA Vice President, and TSPRA 2023 Platinum Star Award Winner. She is the definition of a girl boss, and we are honored to be able to interview with her today! Enjoy! 🙂

“If you could be any character in a movie or tv show, who would you be and why?”

Professor Cathey: “Sex and the City. Hands down. I was obsessed with that show during my college years and I always felt it lacked the diversity that NYC is known for. “

“What is one movie that you feel is overrated/overhyped and why?”

Professor Cathey: “Dreamgirls. I think Beyonce is amazing entertainer, but as as an actress, she falls flat constantly. I think because she has such a tight grip on her persona that she can’t relax enough to feel comfortable in any role she portrays. She just brought down the movie, which had potential. “

“If there was a movie made about your life, what famous actor would you cast to play yourself and why?”

Professor Cathey: “I love Marsai Martin. She used to play on the ABC show “Blackish.” She is such an amazing young actress and I feel she could portray the ebb and flow of my life perfectly.”

“What is one movie you feel should have received more appreciation/love and why?”

Professor Cathey: “Malcolm X by Spike Lee. Denzel Washington is one of my favorite actors and he was immaculate in this movie. Spike Lee, my favorite director, played a dual role as an actor in this movie as well. I love Spike’s cinematography and intertwine with the music selection and the historical piece, this movie easily should have won major awards, but it didn’t. It’s still one of my favorite movies to this day.”

“What are 3 movie recommendations would you give to our readers to watch from your favorites?”

Professor Cathey: “School Daze, Steel Magnolias (the original) and The Bad Seed (the original). I could watch these movies all day and I know them word for word! ”

Whew! Did you guys enjoy that as much as I did? I sure hope so! I want to thank Professor Cathey for joining us! ❤

Loved Professor Cathey’s commentary on great movies and shows!
Marsai Martin is such a talented actress. I feel that her accomplishments so far are just the tip of the iceberg.
I wasn’t sure what to expect with her most recent movie Fantasy Football but she delivered per usual!

What a great series, interviewing faculty members!

Professor Cathey made an insightful comment about Sex and the City. NYC has always been known as being a city of immigrants, with people from nearly all ethnic backgrounds settling there…and yet the lead actresses are all stereotypically white. I also have to join a previous commenter in saying that Denzel Washington is one of my all-time favorite actors. Meeting Denzel is actually something I put on my vision board 😂

Hi Josh! I am happy that you enjoy the series! And thank you for that awesome commentary and sharing your thoughts! I 100% agree, NYC has a plethora of diversity that will hopefully be shown more in movies. Denzel is definitely an icon and worth being on a vision board!
