The Parent Test on Hulu explores 12 different parenting styles by putting the families through various situations to see how each unit operates. The hosts are Ali Wentworth and parenting expert Dr. Adolph Brown that moderate all the conversations and discussions.

I honestly really liked the idea of exploring all of these parenting styles in a isolated environment to see the pros and cons of each. It was surprisingly informative and interesting to see the kids reactions to each style. The only thing I was not fond of was the idea of voting to see who’s parenting style was “the most effective.” The idea doesn’t consider different kids and how their style might be more effective for their own child. There are so many different factors to consider so I do not think you can say one style is the most effective over all others.

This tv show explores 12 different parenting styles which are: helicopter, strict, free range, intensive, new age, disciplined, child-led, negotiator, traditional, natural, routine, and high-achievement. I do feel like some of these could have fallen under the same bracket, but there was slight differences in each technique. I feel there was so much variation in the families that it is hard to say what is effective, we have various numbers of kids and various numbers of parents, I did appreciate the representation of all kinds of families though. Some of these styles I have not even heard of, so it was fascinating to not only hear about them but see them in real life scenarios. Further, there were parenting styles I thought I was familiar with, but I did not understand the full style itself, so the show provided clarity for certain styles as well. I also think this show was not shy of the dangers of parenting which was very authentic of the parenting process and facilitated real discussions about the state of the world. I think if you are interested in seeing the parent and child dynamic in different parenting styles, I would say to give it a chance. It is a thought-provoking experiment, so I feel everyone can take something from it!
